Warblington Castle

Warblington Castle - m.joy

Grey wet day and all that remains of Warblington Castle, a fortified manor house near Hayling island. You wouldn’t believe, wading through the mud of the farm surrounding it, the history. We discovered it by accident, looking for ancestors – a sea captain and his family in the old church next door from 17th century. Warblington is just into Hampshire and close to Emsworth and Hayling island.

Even Elizabeth 1st may have visited in 1586 –  but in January 1643 – Parliamentarians garrisoned the house with a force of between 40 and 80 men.  It was besieged and taken and as the current owners the Cotton family were Royalists, the manor was mostly demolished by Parliamentarian forces – but one turret of the gatehouse was left as an aid to navigation for ships in Langstone channel.

And here it stands today.
