We drove down to Del Quay yesterday, through leafy lanes and over the beautiful rolling Downs – im not sure if the sky was blue but felt it was. It was very busy at Del Quay so we drove on down to Selsey – a long time family stamping ground and walked besides the sea and watched the waves and dipped my feet in the sea. Lovely. Many of the old cottages in Selsey are thatched and surroundings are very flat, water inlets lined with reeds and nearby RSPB sanctuary for birds flying in from the Continent and further away. Much farming and a good place for local asparagus and fresh fish and lobster. Its an old world seaside village
Now the shoreline is uninterrupted by the lifeboat station – a shingle beach. Rumoured, on a stormy night you can hear an underwater church bell on land reclaimed by the sea.
Selsey was the home of (Sir) Patrick Moore the astronomer who lived close to the sea to avoid light pollution., Believe his important things have or are being moved to Chichester Planatarium. Nearby are Bracklesham Bay, Pagham Harbour, Siddelsham and almost opposite – the Isle of Wite.
Sitting by the sea, feel close to my dad and his family now echos sadly but a place they were happy
Selsey is almost an island, cut off sometimes and a long drive down to the sea from Chichester but perhaps this is the beauty of Selsey and the reason this area was well known for smuggling – there are so many small lanes and sea inlets – you get lost , if you want to
