Is long term Paracetamol use safe? – the Doctor who gave up drugs

My mum has been prescribed Paracetamol type pills – 4/day because of back pain, a fracture – caused most likely by more than one fall down some stairs a year and half ago, not in her own home. We have asked her GP to give her alternative pain relief, because of some of the things we have read about what these drugs can do. Because of her heart – Physio is not considered an option – nor, despite asking –  alternative pain relief.

Previously, my father also took an over the counter, unprescribed pain relief drug – because he believed it would keep him healthy. It didnt and his ending was very sad

My understanding is that pain relief doesnt cure – it only attempts to manage pain and feel sure there must be alternative treatments to manage pain which are less invasive – even for elderly patients.

Have seen a tv programme – ‘The Doctor who gave up Drugs’ – where a doctor is trying to encourage GPs to reduce the amount of pills they are prescribing and look for alternatives. Isn’t it time that more Doctors supported him?

It would be interesting to compare pain relief in countries who practise yoga and tai chi as part of daily life – with our own country.
