Sometimes wonder

Few years ago drove from Sussex to other end of Switzerland (and up a mountain) – didn’t reallize how high the place was we were staying at. Beautiful but terrifying.

Love to travel. Flying by plane, not impossible but not easy. Understand implications of travelling.

On the way, spent one night camping in the east of France – arriving very late after everyone had gone to bed. The ground was rock hard and there was some cussing, then surreal experience of being surrounded by hooting owls in the middle of warm summer night, we couldn’t stop laughing. We left early to carry on our journey through Switzerland, driving past Charlie Chaplins home near Lake Geneva and highlight touring a chocolate factory where we were fed free chocolate samples. Switzerland is beautiful, little funny and drops to the valleys below – the most scary have ever seen.

Another place we stayed was run by monks near St Bernard Pass. We didn’t go up the Pass but stayed one night underneath the foot of the mountains – wanted to like this place but didn’t.

Encouraging my son about amazing places bought him a Lonely Planet book ‘Epic hikes around the World’ amazing stories and photographs, one story about this place ‘A winter’s traverse of the Great St Bernard Pass’ by Oliver Smith. It is about his journey on snow shoes over the Pass and people who travelled there before. Beautiful description. Wish one day we will do this. Fear of heights probably makes this impossible.

Sometimes wonder, who was there before, who will be there after, with Climate Change and other worrying things man made – will there be an after and sometimes wonder, except us, will anyone know.
