Beware sleeping gas gang in France on roadside rest areas known as Aires de Service

We travelled to France for a few days recently and not being able to find somewhere to sleep one night, pulled over on a roadside layby in northern France called an ‘Aire de Service’ where truckers also hold up before they make the crossing home on the A16 (Calais-Dunkirk) motorway.

Very late and soon asleep – until a car pulled up next to us in the middle of the night – although the place was almost empty except for truckers. We did hear some sort of rattling at the back of our car and saw the driver run over to the back of a lorry and even drive over with their car, and seem to attach this to back of lorry and try and pull away attached to the lorry.

This didnt seem to work and they drove back right next to us and became so scared – that pulled my shoes on, even wrong way round and drove off as fast as we could.

We thoughts it might be people looking for a way across the channel but found this old article and think we may have been an attempted victim of similar sort of crime. We told the people at the tunnel but not sure they took us seriously although they searched our car well, but they always do  – am always the one who gets stopped and searched.

All i can say is – be careful and think we were lucky
