Downland

Found an old book – ‘The Face of Britain’ – English Downland by H.J. Massingham written long time ago with early black and white prints.

The cover of the book is torn and shows an image of a man ploughing a Downland field behind horses with seagulls wheeling in the air.

There are few lines about a lane that was adopted by the Saxons from the Celts, continuing from Salisbury Plane past Wolstenbury camp and the Beacon – “the Saxons built no roads of their own and used them as a line of communication between Manors. The Saxons were not travellers like the Romans, or the Celts or megalith builders. Where they got land, they stayed put but their beautiful small churches redeem these heathen Saxons from their barbarism”.

Love its about big empty skys, ploughed fields and photos of the land and story of the people who created the landscape.
