a couple of nights ago, driving home alone in the early evening, headlights on, 8-9pm a few miles outside small rural town – 50-55 miles per hour – no cars infront or coming towards me – maybe one car a little way behind and my windows open because it was still a warm evening – when out of the darknesss a large round faced white bird swooped at the car. For a moment felt like it would hit my face but a loud thud and sadly this bird, hit the very edge of my windscreen. I felt really scared but much worse for the bird
i didnt stop as to be honest, it was dark, had no torch and knew there was a car somewhere close behind me assumed it also would have been difficult to find if it had landed somewhere beside the road in the fields without a torch.
a second later and it would have come thru my window and it would have been a different outcome for me and the bird.
i felt terrible and wondered what to do and wondered why this bird, maybe owl – had swooped at a moving car with headlights on instead of avoiding it. my primevil feeling in that split second was that it was going to hit my head which wondered if it was aiming for – as a bird of prey and didnt factor in the windscreen – on the web there are a few storys of encounters like this but suggesting the owl is hunting for small animals on the road and the car just got in the way
