Shoreham Cement Works – Potential or Nightmare

Wrote this some time ago – hope things have changed. Interested because there was possibility that the site was going to be converted into another Eden Park or Dinosaur Park and we have passed by so many times going somewhere else and always wondered. .

Had been contacted to take part in a meeting to prevent new build estate on the flood plane nearby and another Ikea being built. Didn’t go but passed information on to others probably more able to help. The Ikea didn’t go ahead – because of improvement to infrastructure needed.

Great crested newts make land around nearby Shoreham Airport their home – which meant this area was a protected site but this law possibly changed – sad for these newts. Not sure of status of their protection in 2026.

My son had first flying lesson here – flew to France and doesn’t drive. He was told he was very good probably because of many computer games he’s played or emulated. He is a natural. Seems in small planes its all about lining up with the horizon. ‘Lining up with the horizon is essential for controlling an aircraft’s pitch (nose up/down) and bank (wings level) relative to the Earth’s surface. It provides a natural, intuitive reference point to maintain straight-and-level flight, ensure safety against aerodynamic stalls, and navigate efficiently without constantly relying on instruments’.

Shoreham Airport is an art deco building and Northbrook MET aeronautical teaching facility is based on the campus.

This is previous Consultation Plan – which talks about issues and possible solutions.

Have been watching the building below turn into a ghost building. Fascinating and scary. Sometimes went fishing in the river opposite and got chased by swans.

Shoreham Cement Woks - m.joy

Shoreham Cement Works is close to a large flyover – a dated concrete spectacular monstrosity probably built with the concrete from this cement works, driving round this – makes me feel like catapulted into space when you leave one road and join another, not far from Lancing College.

Lancing College is another interesting almost Gothic building stretching to the sky overlooking the airport with art deco main building – also in bad way (inside – the main roof held up by scaffolding while companies still operate from the second floor)

Found a link to website where someone went inside the old cement works. The size of the excavation into the chalk hill behind is shown on a map and is big. Google Earth maybe shows what is happening at the back of this site today.

Looking through the perimeter fence, the security inside is very visible despite the state the building had fallen into and noticed another time a vintage bus driving into the grounds on the other side – which seemed a little unusual – as from outside the road seemed to go nowhere.

Interesting comment on a website, that this site, because built before a certain time – doesn’t have to restore land to its previous condition. Hope – this may have changed.

But large sites with much broken glass and contaminated, prohibitive cost to clean by todays standards.

Perhaps this is the reason, these ‘Leviathan’ buildings – just be – strange bizarre reminders of our need for concrete.

A mystery but previously found a timeline of this cement works.
