Many many times we walked past a big stone near Westmeston opposite St Martins and never thought about why it was there but today looked a little closer and saw ‘Eadwulf AD 765’. When we got home – we looked and seems this stone marks final resting place of King Eadwulf or Ealdwulf of Sussex. Not far from St Martin, which is opposite the stone – is the home of Countess Gytha the daughter of Danish Chieftain and mother of King Harold.
Many times as we drive into Ditchling we pass a statue on the left of a black dog – put there by his/her owners, so never forgotten but the story is a little sad. Not the same as the legend of nearby Black Dog Hill – somewhere it is not a good idea to walk in May.
