‘Bosham in West Sussex is a very pretty village in Chichester Harbour that clings to the land as the waters lap its feet at high tide and the sailing boats sound gently moored at the quay’ – Sussex Exclusive
Bosham (pronounced Bozzum) has connections to Saxon and Norman history. It is very close to the Roman Palace at Fishguard and nearby Chichester and there is nice and far to popular pub and sailing club at Del Quay – almost impossible to park and not easy to find.
Interested because this small town is considered the Venice of England known for its 11th-century church, Roman history and old fashioned streets that submerge at high tide. Also because area around Chichester by the sea, is a family stomping ground.
Underneath the church may be the final resting place of King Harold 11 (Harold Godwinson) or part of him rather than Waltham Abbey – Bosham is the home where he was born and also possibly the final resting place of King Canute’s daughter and featured in the Bayeux Tapestry. No one knows for sure and both bodies (so far) have never been officially found but King Harold 11 was supposed to have been buried by the sea.
Watched a drama about Harold 11. Think it is more than possible an arrow through his eye was invented (please visit the link above but keep an open mind) and very likely he was hacked to pieces and his head and body are buried in two different places. Lot of time has passed and maybe smoke and mirrors. Please also read about him by Paula Lofting who now writes on threadstothepast.
Unsolved mystery what happened to his children and first wife – course of English history would have been different if he had survived. Possibly relatives were exiled across Europe.
